Course Description:
This highly interactive, three-day, skill-based workshop focuses on utilizing a protocol for interviewing latency-age children regarding allegations of child abuse.
As a caseworker, this course provides you with a step-by-step framework to guide the process of gathering evidence, while keeping in mind the child’s state of anxiety and the desire to avoid re-traumatizing the child. You will explore various tools and techniques to help enhance the delicate balance between the child’s comfort level and your need for information. In addition to learning these techniques, you will be given the opportunity to practice interviewing skills through a recorded interview with a professional actor and receive various levels of feedback.
If you are a new caseworker, in order to attend, you must have successfully completed all seven modules of the New Worker Training Academy. Seasoned caseworkers are not required to have completed the New Worker Training Academy in order to attend.

- Culturally Diverse Anatomical Drawings -
Anatomical drawings are a common tool used when interviewing children regarding possible sexual abuse. In order to minimize trauma, best practice suggests that the use of a drawing close to the child’s age and race is important; yet culturally diverse drawings are scarce.
The Butler Institute has created a set of four options for use with children of different races. Although not all encompassing, these options allow various choices for the interviewer and/or the child.
If you would like a copy of these drawings please contact Christa.Doty@du.edu.
