Course Description:

The NY FAR Process and Practice is a two-day training for New York public child welfare staff and  administrators, as well as their community partners, on the core principles, values and practices of family assessment response, also known  as differential response or alternative response. This training will introduce the local county protocols and procedures for FAR cases and will prepare caseworkers for engaging a family within a family assessment response.

At the completion of this two-day training, participants will demonstrate the following competencies:

  • The participant knows the core principles and values of differential response and how these principles and values differ from those of an investigation.
  • The participant knows the criteria used for track assignment into investigative and family assessment response tracks.
  • The participant knows the procedures and mandated activities for cases assigned to the family assessment response track.
  • The participant knows the circumstances under which a case should be reassigned from a family assessment response to an investigation.
  • The participant is aware of the case practice considerations when initiating a family assessment response with a family.
  • The participant is aware of how to introduce him- or herself to families and engage families in a family assessment response.
  • The participant is able to define safety in the context of a family assessment response and how it is best achieved through engagement with the family.
  • The participant can describe and is able to use family-friendly partnership or engagement strategies with families.
  • The participant is able to demonstrate how to overcome obstacles to building relationships with families using effective engagement strategies that place families at the center of the family assessment process.
  • The participant can describe the ways in which culture impacts engagement with families.
  • The participant can define family-led assessment, explain its purpose, describe how it will be used in family assessment response, and demonstrate skills that will facilitate a family-led assessment with families.
  • The participant knows how to partner with families to creatively plan for and access available informal supports and community services that best meet child and family needs during the family assessment response.

Target Audience:
This training is by INVITATION ONLY and is mandatory for all NY FAR workers and supervisors. It is also recommend for agency managers and administrators and additional CPS workers and agency stakeholders to gain a basic understanding of FAR process and practice.

There is no charge to attend this training, but attendance is by INVITATION ONLY.
