Initial Intervention with the Non-Offending Parent

Class Description:

This two-day skill focused training is for caseworkers who intervene with parents after a credible outcry of abuse by a child. Through interview simulations, trainees will be able to demonstrate crisis intervention techniques, culpability assessment skills, and develop an immediate safety plan.

 

Target Audience:

Caseworkers or child welfare professionals with less than three years of child welfare experience, and Juvenile probation and diversion officers.

 

Competencies:
  • Understand that personal and professional expectations regarding the non-offending parent can create barriers to the development of a relationship and planning for safety of the victim.
  • Understand the five types of child disclosure and how the disclosure creates loss for the NOP and the reactions the NOP has to the disclosure
  • Understand the continuum or level of participation prior to the disclosure.
  • Understand what needs to be accomplished in the first encounter with the NOP and ways to enhance the first parent child interaction post disclosure
